The Watering Hole

Met with buca again for some drinks at The Brass Monkey, which is a lovely little establishment off the main drag, on a small side street downtown. Good music and decor, varied clientele, and a huge room in the back set up with an Arabic flair. Posh pillows covering the floor, oriental rugs on the wall, and little kneeling tables everywhere. At one end, a huge projection screen for satellite television. I was introduced to the owner, who is a closet fight fan, and sure enough, he offered to show some harder to get matches to me as long as I was buying the drinks. And even considering the time difference, he said he’d be happy to do it. Private screenings of fights after hours. Nice.

The Monkey is devoid of a “scene” and friendly to all. The bartenders give you greeting handshakes, though it surely helped being assimilated by the regulars. We sat and enjoyed our pints, the five of us: an American, two Scots, South Africa and Italy also represented. We spoke comparatively about many things, and we all conceded to listen and enjoy the stories, adding and embellishing when appropriate. I absolutely love the variance of perspective at any given pub in this city. It’s refreshing and necessary, because it shouldn’t matter where you’re from, and here, it doesn’t.

I’m going back tonight.

And it looks like I’ve found a couple of new sparring partners. It’s about damn time, because this beer is starting to add up…

I love the Brass Monkey! My cousin took me there when I was in Edinburgh in 2001. The decor was just fabulous, & good food too! We sat in the back room & watched art house movies.

Glad to read that things are going swingingly for you abroad. I am envious of your adventures. Sounds like you're soaking things in nicely.
I finally got around to locating your web home here and thought I'd establish some intercontinental contact.
My wife suggested I get this LiveJournal thing going, so here I am floating in bloggerspace… Still figuring it out… I will stay tuned for future episodes.

Before you ask, no, upl is not an STD that I contracted in the Tenderloin. Apparently I can't figure out a keyboard…
