I Hate Memes, but I Love Music.

Music quiz ripped the hell off from dougygyro.

Of all the bands/artists in your cd/record collection, which one do you own the most albums by?
Well, I have pretty much the entire Cranes catalogue, which amounts to quite a number of imports, EPs, and singles in addition to normal albums. As for standard releases, probably The Cure. They’re just so long-lived and prolific, and I have them all except for ‘Wild Mood Swings’. And that’s intentional.

What was the last song you listened to (voluntarily)?
Since I just fell asleep to it, the last one I remember is Loreena McKennitt’s ‘Skellig’ from ‘The Book of Secrets’.

What’s on your record player right now?
I’m flipping back and forth between the new Interpol, the new Tom Waits and the 3-CD post-mortem compilation from Mansun. All are very, very good.

What bands do you have the most MP3s of?
Arab Strap, Cranes, Low, Elvis Costello, Hooverphonic, and Tom Waits.

What song would you say sums you up?
‘Three Years’ by Tram, ‘Gin I Win’ by Timesbold, or ‘Beautiful Friend’ by Cranes.

What’s your favorite local band?
Scotland – Arab Strap, even though they’re from Falkirk, and not Edinburgh. San Francisco – Probably Halou right now, but it had been Faith No More for some time. And though no longer together, Battery is still amazing.

What was the last show you attended?
Cranes at King Tut’s in Glasgow.

What was the greatest show you’ve ever been to?
Might have been The Black Heart Procession on Halloween at the Great American Music Hall. They had Maquiladora playing on the floor, lounge-style, in between sets, and a row of white lace-clad girls on the stage with them, spattered with blood and with red LED lights in their mouths. Films playing on a screen in the background, totally amazing.

But then there was my ultimate triumph: I managed to secure a couple of tickets to see a secret Cure show at the Fillmore on Valentine’s Day back in 2000. It was right before their Bloodflowers tour, and they played two full hours of all old, dark material. The crowd was mostly industry, press, and lucky bastards like me who had heard about it. Virgin had a signing the night before, and it seemed like the entire population of San Francisco was lined up on Market Street, all chatting away, Cure paraphernalia in hand. It was simply intoxicating.

What’s the shittiest band you’ve ever seen in concert?
I saw The Church at the Fillmore in SF and I was incredibly saddened and deflated. Love their music, but some guy actually threw a drink at them. Funny thing was, I got blamed for it and almost got removed from the premises. And I almost didn’t resist.

What band do you love musically but hate the members of?
Well, Oasis is the obvious answer, but I don’t really love them. I think Connor from Bright Eyes is a weepy, precocious little fuck, but I do admire his stuff. Chan Marshall (Cat Power) probably gains the vote for the most crabby in person, but I really don’t know her. I just know that being a good musician doesn’t give her the right to disregard her audiences in the way for which she’s renown.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
I sang for a high school cover band called Crown of Thorns. It was a blast, but I soon found that the greatest problem with our outfit was that the singer couldn’t sing. But we had great fun doing Cult, Mother Love Bone, and a rousing rendition of the Divinyls’ ‘I Touch Myself’. Yes, we have it on tape, and no, you can’t see it. Trust me – you wouldn’t want to.

What show are you looking forward to?
I am just going to miss Arab Strap doing an all-acoustic, all-request bar show in Glasgow, dagnabbit. I believe that Mark Lanegan is playing SF on the night I get back.

What is your favorite band shirt?
I don’t wear too many these days, but the Death In June logo is always good for drawing interesting looks towards its Gestapo symbology.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?
I think B’eirth from In Gowan Ring would be a kick, if I could understand what the hell he was talking about. Marilyn Manson would be fun, as would Mark Lanegan or the boys from Timesbold. Douglas P. from Death in June, David Tibet from Current 93, or Boyd Rice would probably do my head in. But I’d really just like to buy ol’ Tomcat a whisky and have a chat about the One that Got Away…

What musician would you like to hump for a day?
Jarboe would be weird. Peaches would be deadly. I’d break Björk. Chris Cornell is a man. So that leaves a likely candidate in Alison Goldfrapp.

What song reminds you of someone you love?
‘Come This Far’ from ‘Loved’ by Cranes.

Sabbath or solo Ozzy?
I don’t care for either, but Sabbath conjures just a few good memories…from a long time ago.

Commodores or solo Lionel Richie?
Hello? Is it me you’re looking for?
Lionel is my secret heartthrob. I wish he wouldn’t take himself so seriously, though.

What was the greatest decade for music?
Good question. One could argue that the 50s and 60s were the most important, but the most relevant for me is probably the late 70s, as the sound that was pioneered by The Smiths, The Cure, and Joy Division really gave rise to some very striking music later on down the road that means quite a lot to me today. And besides, 1970s Waits is probably the biggest influence on the entire paradigm of MUSIC in any of its iterations. But then, I’m biased.

What’s the first Cd/tape you bought?
Oh, man. Mötley Crüe. Shout at the Devil, baby! I can still remember the introduction word for word…

How many music-related videos/dvds do you own?
Not too many. I’d say a half-dozen. I’ve recorded some old MTV spots, and I think video is a neat medium to supplement the sound of a band or artist, but music is meant to be listened to, and not necessarily watched. I prefer stirring up my own ghosts and visions, assisted by the sounds of my favourite musicians.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
‘Black Hawk Down’ by Hans Zimmer is absolutely incredible. For something with standard songs on it, ‘Dead Man Walking’ is great, with Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Suzanne Vega, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

What’s the crappiest CD/record/etc you’ve ever bought?
I bought ‘We Are Beautiful People’ by For Stars thinking it would be a good find. Instead I found that they really aren’t beautiful people, but rather a bunch of whiny, atavistic emo-adults trying to come off as being wise and cultured. I gave it away the very next day.

Do you prefer vinyl or CDs?
I like CDs very much. I agree that there is some amount of ‘atmosphere’ lost with such clean over-production, but I can’t really be bothered with the care and cleaning of a vinyl record system. And it’s too tedious for the car. 🙂

All totalled, how much do you spend on music in a month?
Back in SF, I would easily drop about $100/month at Amoeba. As a student recently, maybe $20/month.

Bonus! Name ten bands/musicians for other people to check out, post haste.
Devics
Timesbold
Dirty Three
Queen Adreena
The Twilight Singers
Tram
Bowery Electric
Clotaire K
Red Sparowes
Rachel’s
Puressence
Piano Magic

I read somewhere that she's painfully shy. True, rumor?
We saw her at SXSW and she sang everything through a curtain of hair…

    Re: Chan Marshall
Yeah, that sounds about right. As I mentioned, I've never seen her, but I've heard some terrible stories that she's prone to storming off in a huff if someone is making noise in the audience or something goes wrong with the audio.
    Still love her, though.
