“Dearest Anne,

In a few hours, I’m going to take the best company of men in the world into France. We’ll give the bastards hell. Strangely, I’m not particularly scared but in my heart is a terrific longing to hold you in my arms. I love you Sweetheart, forever.

Your Tom.”

The last written words of Lt. Thomas Meehan, commander of E Co., 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, jotted down just before the launch of the U.S., U.K., and Canadian invasion of Normandy on June 6th, 1945. Meehan’s Waco glider would crash upon impact with the French countryside, killing all aboard. It would be days before command of the company was officially transferred over to Dick Winters, as U.S. Command struggled to find out what had happened to Easy’s CO.
