Patterns.

Awright, then. Exactly one month from today, I’m pleased to say, I’ll be setting foot once again upon Scottish soil for a fair holiday. Plans are many and varied, and I’ll be eagerly looking forward to the northern haar and the long shadows, mossy stones and friendly faces of lovely people who I haven’t seen in two years now. Imperial pints, baby. And the limitless, resplendent stretches of vast moors and rolling greenery, juxtaposed with slippery cobbles and layer upon layer of stone tenement and church…every street a story.

After an excruciating stretch of work-related busy-bee buzzing, all for an epic cause of which I’ll be announcing very soon, I’m taking three weeks to regenerate, to reconstitute, and to revitalize. I have so much to look forward to; it feels like I’m coming home. No stress at all, drifting calmly inbetween the plans, with a thousand things that I want to see again, and a million that I haven’t yet seen. How to choose?

Scotmap

A brief itinerary:
Arrive on 24 September in Edinburgh, walk around town. Go directly to Elephant House, do not pass go. See everyone. Then proceed to the Brass Monkey. Wake up later.

Meet up with my dear Dynamophone-mate rudysyntax and nab a car, headed for the Western Highlands and Isles. Fall into Loch Leven and drool at Glencoe and throw stones in Fort Bill until we load everything onto the ferry and hopscotch around. Iona, Staffa, Mull, and Ardnamurchan. Oban and then, after a week, spend some loving time with my dear Glasgow family, who recently lost one of the brightest stars in the northern hemisphere. Goodnight, dear Jennie.

Drive home to Edinburgh on 30 September to meet up with gingiber and anonymous_seth for Doors Open Day. Spelunk, explore, and go into places we’re not supposed to go. See everyone. Don’t sleep.

Edina

Back to my lovely Edina.

1 October, take a tight hold of Azra Mo and drive northward to Aberdeen and hermiston, my very dearest historian-extraordinaire. Fall in love with granite again. Visit St. Andrews, Stonehaven, Dunottar, Fucking Inverness, talk to the NTS at Culloden and take some notes to be included in next year’s War College lecture. Speyside whisky trail, drown Danny in Drambuie, and wherever the wind will take us.

I’ll pry myself away by 8 October and drive back to Edinburgh to meet with old profs and tea and elephants and bagels. Try to convince Harry and Alex that I’m serious when I tell them I’m coming back to uni just give me a couple more years. Kick Ralph’s arse if I don’t see him in town for Nude Day. Find Gilbert. Fall into Auld Reekie again and pretend that I never left. See everyone, love everyone, drink with everyone. Threaten to invade Northumbria again if the bike doesn’t eat me alive. Wish that seolta was here to share in the beauty, but then remember that she is, and will always be.

All this in three weeks, and leagues, oceans, and loaves more, all of which will be documented somehow and somewhere. Leave 14 October and promise to come back the following year, if they’ll have me.

Where are you helensethlaramariannealexalexpaulsharoneireannmatmattsuzygrahamgrahamsarastuartpaulsandyalisonmo? Where are you everyone? Can you come out to play, to laugh, to drink, and to catch up? Can you and won’t you spare an evening with me?

Marvellous. I'm hearing the call of Ecosse again, mainly because I spent July's heatwave drooling over this site:

Nothing like walking around Edinburgh on a frosty November evening, down the Mound, through the New Town and into a pub on St Stephen's Street.

Precisely recollected. Remember the hot chestnuts on Hanover St? Is there anything better in the world?

    Whhhhiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I was actually thinking about this yesterday! I was in the Raeburn Room at a public lunchtime lecture by Dr Fox and then sneaked into the Playfair Library with my boss. For some reason I was reminded of you and I was wondering about when you might appear! And it will be soon! Huzzah! *cue fanfare*
I shall be partaking of the doors open goodness myself but will also be around for drinking. I am unpacking my spare liver as we speak.
    Welcome home, matey! 😀

Greatly looking forward to seeing you. I'd have to make a stop in NYC to nab those two ruffians, but I'll at least be bringing some related fingerbones…

That would be lovely. How fitting that we'd be able to meet over there instead of over here, and much desired. Be in touch.
