Carefully Laid Plans.

With great excitement and not a small amount of pleasure, I’m finally in the clear to divulge some pretty big occupational news that’s been brewing for quite a while. I’m not terribly good at keeping secrets, and those who have spoken with me somewhat recently might have known about these plans-in-the-works for some time. But now it’s official, so the details can be comfortably released: today, November 1st, marks the first day of my ownership of Gamescape in San Rafael. It’s been a long time in coming, and I’ve been looking forward to this for what seems like ages – ten years of employment there during every other duty in my life. Six years of management, through repeated commutes to Berkeley while I studied to gain my first degree. A pause for Edinburgh’s call and then back into the breach. My task and my solace; keeping me clothed and fed for much of my adult life. Always the backdrop of my long days and the heart of my longer nights, a center of community and a respite from the daily grind. That’s my daily grind.

Gamescape1

The reason I came back from Scotland, instead of embarking on a doctoral program there, was to pursue the possibility that I could secure this purchase, and I am ecstatic that we were able to make this happen, nearly two years ahead of schedule. With good fortune, shrewd operation, and a strong economy, this business will one day provide me with the capital to return to the North so I may finish my other academic goals. We have had a steady increase in sales since our store’s opening in 1994, and this past year has seen amazing growth. It’s not like starting a new business, rather inheriting one that is already up and running well, which we already know how to make successful. I would not have been able to do this without my business partner, André, and though he is much newer to this side of the industry, he has gaming in his blood, a fierce sense of fiscal fairness, and the perfect disposition to supplement my many shortcomings. I am very lucky to have him, and we’re a solid management team, with the best crew of employees ever seen in a game store. These numbers are growing, too.

Gamescape3

The original Gamescape is the oldest full-service game store in the Bay Area, and one of the first to be set up in the country, some twenty-five years ago. It’s an honor to carry on this name, and to bring a truly august institution into the next era. We are unerringly dedicated to creating a warm community of social connectedness, pulling together people from all ages and proclivities, backgrounds and imaginations, in order to cultivate a place where they may all come to do one thing well – to have fun. We are a non-electronic nexus of competition and cooperation, straddling the line between geek and cool while accepting everyone into our fold. Our eyes are always turned toward the next big thing, with tendrils of interest throughout the world and always on the hunt for fun in any of its guises. We are the non-bar, the anti-nightclub, the alternative to faceless posturing and the degradation of our minds on MTV and hyper-reality shows. Pop in after work, pull up a chair, meet with friends, and talk some smack while playing the stresses of life away.

Gamescape4

Gamescape5

Gamescape6

We make money by selling games. But there’s so much more than that. We run tournaments with fabulous prizes, host classes on painting and terrain building, and we gather nightly to connect a mighty network of wonderful people together, all with similar interests. We work with the local community to foster stronger ties to gaming as a way to unplug and enjoy leisure time once again – in cafés, youth centers, and after-school programs. Game designers and manufacturers often come to us for mechanical and aesthetic advice on what the industry will accept and tout, and our regular legion of devoted gamers is always ready to lend a hand and a roll of the dice in this regard. We play-test for others with pleasure and provide a discerning voice for newspapers and other media that show interest in our genre and its society. Gaming is in our hearts; it is both love and leisure.

Gamers1

Gamers2

Gamers3

Gamers4

And we have big plans for the future: we will hold seminars on game theory, design, historical contexts of wargaming, critical aspects of role-playing, and self-manufacturing small-press games. Foam-fighting leagues and one-shot rpg nights for people with short attention-spans or little time. A yearly terrain/tournament project taken around the local convention circuit that will continue to draw crowds. TransBay competitions with other game stores throughout the area. A return to tradition – the formulation and sustaining of local backgammon, go, and chess leagues – just like the old days. And a million other things, besides.

We’re not elitist, we’re not cooler-than-thou, we’re not anti-social, like so many counter-cultured clerks in comic book stores and record shops worldwide. We’re just geeks who love our job, and we know how to make you feel welcome in our house. Wanna play?

Do you think that you might be offering online sales anytime in the future? I'm too far away to stop by while I'm running errands, but I'd love to support you whenever I need game-y stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚ Even a paper catalogue and mail-in orders would be fine.

  23. FunkyPlaid Says:
    November 3rd, 2006 at 1:22 am

Thanks for your kind words, and also for the offer of support. You know, we have so much stuff that it makes a catalogue absolutely impossible. But I like to have pretty much at least one of everything you could possibly think of – our stock is incredibly deep, and anything we don't have I can usually get in a day or so. If you need something, I'll be happy to send it out, now matter where you are. Just give the store a call or me a mail.

As someone who spent a great deal of his growing up coming in and out of Gamescape, I can say that it couldn't have gone to a better person. I'm not quite sure how to put into words how happy I am for you, and for the store. My only negative is that getting over there to watch the store grow even further is tough give how far it is from where I live now (Alameda).
I definitely want to try to at least come over to say hello and congratulations in person, when do you work in the store itself?

  62. FunkyPlaid Says:
    November 3rd, 2006 at 1:50 am

This is very sincere, and I thank you for it. Buying a house in Alameda is no small accomplishment, either, and we'll have to buy each other a drink in cross-celebration! I'm at the store pretty much every day, with the usual exception of Sundays and Tuesdays. Give us a call ahead of time and I'll make sure I'm around. Would love to see you.
